What is a Recreational Vessel Safety Check?

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will perform a complimentary examination of your boat, confirming that you meet both Federal and state requirements for safety. Purely advisory, the Auxiliary issues no citations, but will award a decal to display that your vessel has passed the examination. This was formerly referred to as a Courtesy Marine Examination. To schedule an official U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection (COI) for a commercial passenger vessel in Fort Myers, you must contact the USCG Sector St. Petersburg Inspections Department at (727) 824-7534. Be sure to have the Application for inspection completed.

James joined the Auxiliary in 2021 and became a Qualified Vessel Examiner the following year. He has earned two Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendations, a Coast Guard Unit Commendation, an Auxiliary Membership Service Award, and the Department of Homeland Security Outstanding Unit Award.

The Vessel Safety Check gives you a quick and easy way to check that you are ready for the coming season. Items checked include:

  • Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets)
  • Registration and numbering
  • Navigation lights
  • Ventilation
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
  • Battery cover and connections

Note that these items are required by law; missing gear can result in a citation if the Coast Guard inspects you on the water. This check is a risk-free way to ensure you meet legal minimums.
