FORT MYERS, Fla., September 1, 2026 — Getting caught on the water during a sudden Florida storm can be terrifying, but proper preparation makes all the difference. To equip local and visiting boaters with critical navigation and survival skills, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Fort Myers Beach Flotilla 91 is hosting its monthly "Boat America" safety course on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

The intensive, one-day program focuses on emergency handling, route planning, storm safe havens, local navigation hazards, and state safety regulations. "Attending an in-person class is an excellent opportunity for students to interact, share perspectives, and gain local knowledge," said Gary Martell, Flotilla Commander of Flotilla 91. "Participants learn about the importance of life jackets, risk reduction, preparedness, and exercising sound judgment."

While online courses offer convenience, Coast Guard Auxiliary officials emphasize that hands-on instruction provides irreplaceable real-time learning. "The single biggest reward of an in-person class is spontaneous, real-time social dynamics," added Dave Massey, Public Education Staff Officer. "Many students comment about the realization of what they didn’t know. That is a powerful and transformative moment that highlights the importance of education and preparation."
