Americas Waterway Watch
In the spirit of the historic Coast Watch program that mobilized citizens to defend our shores during World War II, America’s Waterway Watch now invites you to help protect our waterways from modern threats. If you live, work, or play near America’s waterways, you can play a vital role in safeguarding our communities by reporting any suspicious activity you may observe. How It Works America’s Waterway Watch is a simple, no-commitment program. Unlike traditional Neighborhood Watch programs, there’s no need to attend meetings or carry a membership card. Your role is straightforward: if you notice suspicious behavior, simply report it to the Coast Guard or local law enforcement. Remember, it’s not people who are suspicious—it’s behavior. Do not approach or confront anyone acting suspiciously; instead, note key details and call 9-1-1 or the National Response Center at 877-24-WATCH. On the Water? Take Action! If you’re on the water and see something out of the ordinary, contact the Coast Guard via cell at 239-463-5754 or on VHF channel 16. Don’t pick up strangers, and never hesitate to report unusual activity—migrant vessels may carry individuals fleeing the law or posing other threats. Get Involved with the Coast Guard Auxiliary If you’re passionate about boating safety, consider joining the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Known as “America’s Volunteer Lifesavers,” the Auxiliary provides critical support in public education, vessel safety, search and rescue, environmental protection, and more. Auxiliarists contribute over 2 million volunteer hours each year, helping to keep our waters safe. Known as "America's Volunteer Lifesavers" the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was established by Congress in 1939 to assist the Coast Guard in promoting boating safety. It boasts more than 21,000 members from all walks of life who receive special training so that they may be a functional part of Coast Guard Forces. Auxiliarists assist the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as public education, vessel safety checks, safety patrols, search and rescue, maritime security and environmental protection and Coast Guard Academy introduction programs for youth.
